This is an organization that publishes seriously ill children's stories and safely encourages support by asking people send mail to these kids. I imagined this task to be a bit like sending words out into a void, since the organization warns that the chances of receiving anything back is low. However, I did actually get mail back about the card I sent out that one of my classes had signed. My students were excited and pleased to get mail themselves, and it taught an important lesson I thought- that it can be both meaningful and simple to make a difference (the same lesson I learned actually!) I also found that is was fun! Who doesn't love getting mail, but I at least also love to send it. I enjoyed writing the notes and sending them out. My friends also benefitted from this- I loved sending mail out so much they all got postcards too!
I'm hoping to encorporate this into my classroom somehow. This year as a bulletin board and who knows? Maybe if I get my own classroom this can tie into a lesson somehow as well.
