January:

-One long kriya

-One short meditation near work

February:

-Two short meditations near work

-Three-day Sahaj Samadi meditation course + 3 meditations at home

-Brief meditation during ayurvedic cooking course
Done!

I made sure I consciously avoided meat and seafood in my diet. I particularly tried to focus on eating more vegetables and fruit instead of more grains, sugar or fatty food and only a couple of times ate processed fake meat. I took an ayurvedic cooking class which pointed out some other foods to minimise or avoid.

It really wasn't hard. I felt fine. I didn't really miss meat. The only times I generally crave meat strongly are when I'm sick but I didn't get sick, at least not enough to need meat, during the month. I'm not sure I noticed feeling that much healthier. Maybe, but maybe I would need longer to really do so.

You can find my month's food diary here: http://www.43things.com/people/progress/pancreas24601/16808560

I did another, all-day writing class with an Australian writer, which was great, and then wrote a poem within the same-day deadline she gave, which she published on her site. Great feeling!
26 Jan

Went today with friends. It's not that good value for money and the entertainment isn't in good taste but it's enjoyable and varied. This is the biggest cuckoo clock in the world.
Finished and gave my girlfriend a 'living together' mix in time for finally doing so.

Signed a Lease. So my girlfriend and I are finally moving in together, and have less time pressure to buy. And can take some time off from looking.
Did a practical course in ‘Aromatouch’. It was massaging people’s back, head and feet with aromatherapy oils. It included running fingers up the spine to spread the oil, pressing the hands horizontally up the sides of the back, pulling the palms up the back and arms, and walking the thumbs up the back. This was what I wanted from a practical course. It was also nice to receive a massage.

Aiming for February!

With the same foundation. It was an amazing experience. There were highs and lows. The first one was four years ago and I didn't write that much in my How I Did It entry from then. This one was harder physically - I was very sore from the yoga, my knee injury and sore wrist held me back, and I got a headcold which made a day and a half of it really hard. Two and a half days were silent, and I didn't have trouble not talking but not thinking about talking was very difficult and distracting. But it was also wonderful. There was lovely sense of being alone and yet connected at the same time, and by the end there was such a contagious joy in us all. I'm really glad I did this.

100% complete!

I started during a holiday and decided to keep up the momentum. Sometimes it was difficult to find anything interesting or different to other days, and some days I forgot altogether. During the last couple of months I started another photo challenge (of public art in Melbourne's Docklands) that made it easier to find ideas, I recommend this and wish I'd started earlier.

My completed project is here: http://365project.org/pancreas/

And in this entry is perhaps my favourite - the cat poledancing!

I wrote a poem about this goal and put it in a beer bottle. I combined this with my goal of writing more poetry and my girlfriend's goal of brewing beer, for which she has collected bottles. I didn't put it in in the sea or anything. I don't feel the need and it's too environmentally unfriendly. The message will later be taken out and the bottle used for beer.

I have an idea which wouldn't be too environmentally unfriendly. My girlfriend plans to brew beer at my house soon and has some beer bottles saved for re-use for the brew.I might try to put a message I'm one of these for her before she puts the brew in and take a pic. After all the goal doesn't actually say put the bottle in the ocean!

I put theory into practice by giving my partner a massage and she was very pleased. I may try using base oils next time as the teacher recommended - as my skin is too sensitive for essential oils, but this time I just used a sheet with no oil. At this stage I'm happy with the course I did and don't plan on a more comprehensive one (partly because of my oil phobia) so I'll tick this off. I did recommend a part two to the course I did so we can practice in the course next time.

I went on a two-person segway tour in Prague. The Segways don't take long to get used to and are comfortable but extremely fun, even if you're initially nervous like I was - relaxing is the key to mastering it and you can take as long as you need to get comfortable before getting on the road. Prague is the perfect city for this because it makes the hills so much easier and the Viewpoints tour really takes advantage of them - plenty of photo opportunities.

We stayed near the Charles Bridge in Prague and got there at 4:50am. It was already a bit lighter than I hoped, but the sun definitely hadn't risen yet, and did gradually within the next hour. It was gorgeous and we witnessed a wedding on the bridge - now that's dedication! I do think the winter fog depicted in the classical images of a Charles Bridge sunset would have added something but nevertheless, a goal ticked.

I stayed at the Zauberlehring Hotel in Stuttgart which has themed rooms. I stayed in the Titanic Room with my girlfriend. It has portholes, a bath, lots of nice little touches, but the piece de resistance is the waterbed, which is why I wanted to stay there. I was so excited and giddy when I first got on it, during the day when we checked in. It was fun and felt great. I never wanted to get up! I'm a fidget but the bed made me more comfortable not moving. However in the night I did move a few times, and ended up sore the next morning. I'm not sure why exactly - maybe I need support under my back? - but it was still totally worth it. Neither of us felt the other move in the night which was good too.

Went to Central Europe! Visited Germany (Berlin is pictured), Austria, Czech, and briefly Switzerland and (Tour de) France. It was a great trip, just over two weeks.
27 Jul, 13

In Hamburg, the first city of my Central Europe trip, I noticed there was a tethered hot air balloon tourist attraction but didn't get to go because it was too windy and not running on my last day there. So I thought I may have missed out, but then found there was another in Berlin. I went on the day my girlfriend was off cycling around the city and I had some time on my own.

The balloon goes up over the area where a lot of the wall used to be, near Checkpoint Charlie. It fits maybe 15 people or so and goes up for 15 minutes, for 19€. The balloon has a tether though the middle so the platform is shaped like a bagel that you can walk around.

I know it's a tethered hot air balloon, so not quite the same as the higher ones, but I'm satisfied - particularly as my girlfriend doesn't want to go at all so I wouldn't necessarily want to do the very expensive high ones without her.

Such a shame, there is a retreat not far from me happening in a few weeks' time but it clashes with me being overseas (goal 75).
I went with some colleagues yesterday for the first time in about three years and got a middling score of 71 (second last). This would be lovely from Charles Bridge, Prague. I'll try to get up in time!

My favourite hipster learning academy (the same one that taught me to do cryptic crosswords) had a brief course in hair braiding. I learnt to do a French braid and a waterfall braid (pictured) – on other people. I asked for advice on braiding my own still-pretty-short hair and the teacher said to do it in front of the mirror, starting by using the hair closest to the front to make smaller braids. I’ll give that a try sometime. And maybe I’ll grow my hair a bit before the Day Zero Project is over.

My first proper game with my dad. It took over two hours and he gave me lots of hints. Of course he still won comfortably!

We've since had one more, that was a little quicker, but with less hints. I feel like I'm getting better but there is still so much to learn.

The chessboard is etched in the pavement on a big corner in the city in Melbourne and sometimes has giant chess pieces on it with people playing. In fact it often used to, but rarer now – this photo I took is years old. This is perfect for my Melbourne list and I want to do it. I’ve investigated how to get access to the giant pieces – all I need now is to learn to play – and choose a playing partner.

My dad gave me my first lesson and it was overwhelming. I have a lot to learn!

The donation itself went fine. It did hurt a little when the needle went in, but really no big deal. It took longer than expected due to perhaps not having as much water as I should have (I drank heaps all day but kind of tapered off in the last couple of hours). So I was asked to squeeze my hand and wiggle my toes a lot, and got small heatpacks for my arm and hand to encourage blood flow. At one point the woman taking my blood thought she might have to finish early, but we didn't have to - I got there in the end. It may have taken more like 15 minutes for me, instead of 5-10 for the standard half-litre.

It hurt more than I expected when the needle was taken out. But that was very brief, and then I was fine. I stuck around for a while afterwards and got a free milkshake and crackers, then went to my friend's house and ate most of a pizza. I was told to eat and drink a lot to replenish the system so I did!

I did it!

I’ve been preparing for a month this time, after a previous attempt was unsuccessful, so was nervous for two reasons:

1) the obvious, new experience, needle, will it hurt, will I pass out

2) really wanting to just get it done and not be rejected again

During this month and especially the last week I ate a lot of beef, lamb, chickpeas, lentils, tofu + vitamin C-rich fresh orange juice, capsicum and carrots.

During the initial check, before testing my hemoglobin, the nurse tested my heart rate, and found that it was a little too high (104) to be able to donate, but she said that’s common on a first donation and we’ll measure that again later to see if it drops. My hemoglobin turned out okay – 129. The minimum to be allowed to donate is 120 and last time I was 118. Still not super-high so it looks like I really need to work at it to be eligible, but good news for this time.

I then sat in the donating area, chatted a little to my friend who was donating plasma (and was fine), read a book and tried to control my breathing. The nurse came back and measured my pulse manually and it was still too high. I knew it would be fine but I couldn’t help being nervous! After more attempts to calm down, some water, and a brief call to my girlfriend I finally managed to get it down to 98. So finally I was allowed to do it...

The mug is a custom Continental mug I got from collecting enough of their packet soup packages and says "vampire slayer". I love it but don't use it all that much and when I started the project I thought I'd meet this goal by keeping the mug at my desk at work and eating packet soups in it. However I've moved offices a lot and never felt stable enough to bother having my own soup mug in. Lately I've started cooking big pots of vegetable soups at home from Hugh Fearnsley-Whittingshall's new cookbook, and while dinner entrees I would eat from bowls, I have occasional snacks from the soup mug. This may be how I complete the goal.

Note added to goal Make a pie on Pi day
I didn't technically make the pie today on Pi Day (3.14 in the US date format) because I have work today and a concert tonight, but I did it yesterday in preparation for eating it today.

I started with a simple a tomato, goat's cheese & thyme tart with puff pastry yesterday for dinner, and spent the rest of the evening attempting a cherry lattice pie.

Making the pastry from scratch - even with a food processor and with a friend supervising - was very difficult and I clearly didn't do a great job because I couldn't shape or cut it without it falling apart, so I ended up amateurly putting it together in the bowl. It looks charming though, like something a child made all by themselves!

As I didn't have a pie tin I used a casserole dish to bake it, which would cook it a little differently.

I don't know if I want to do this again. I enjoy using ready-made pastry for pies and tarts but making my own might not be for me.

The tart was delicious. The pie, which has been partially eaten for breakfast, was also tasty but more for the cherries than the pastry, which tastes like a biscuit that sticks together a bit in your mouth. It certainly is nice, but I've had better.

The best tracks were Control, a rearrangement of Only Happy When it Rains and You Look So Fine, which had a much longer coda than usual.

I’m so glad I didn’t end up going to the Sydney Soundwave show as there was a massive problem with floods delaying their gear truck and they couldn’t play. Would have been gutted!

I think I will stick to these, and in a week or so I will place an order for the next six months.

I completed the three samples we were given in the class I took. We did several clues as a class and then in small groups, and I finished them later (with a lot of help from online resources such as thesaurus, google, anagramfinder and oneacross. This was the first step.

The second involved downloading a whole heap along with a crossword software where I got to do them on my own, although I could check whether letters were correct, which I did several times, as well as aforementioned resources. I didn’t ask the software to reveal any letters though. and I did finish a crossword that way.

I’ve started the next step – doing one of these by myself but without using cheat resources – only exception is once I think I have the answer (from the definition) I can use something like a thesaurus to help me check the wordplay until I understand the clue in both senses. I’ve done well in one of these, but I can only cross off this goal once I manage to complete one in this way without cheating. Very happy with my progress so far after only a few days.

9/1: In some ways it seems to be getting harder. I’m not much better at putting them in, though I manage after many attempts. The last few wears I’ve still felt the strange extra moistness. At first I thought maybe I’m not cleaning them well enough so I should stick to dailies, but I tried a new contact today and it had the same feeling. Strange…
I took the introductory class in solving cryptic crosswords last night and I found it really helpful. We were taught basic clues and about the definition, linking words, instruction and fodder. I found to my surprise that I was able to do three clues from one sample before the class began. We did a number of clues as a class, and then in small groups, and I’ve been doing more clues since then. Often I find it easiest to try to work backwards from a synonym of the definition that fits the number of clues, to then try to make that fit the wordplay. It gets easier as I have more letters, and it’s great that having two parts of a clue means that when I get it right I can be sure of it, and don’t have to go back to fix an answer later when the letters don’t fit for another clue (which I do sometimes in quick crosswords).

I’m excited about doing more!

Marked goal Complete a cryptic crossword as in progress
Last week I finished a triathlon mixtape for my girlfriend - very exciting! I have some more ideas on the go, and after another mix is done I may consider this goal complete as I'm back in the swing of things.

5/1: I wore them for eight hours but in one eye I couldn’t get rid of the feeling that it was too moist, as if there was all this solution or something between my eye and the contact. It definitely wasn’t in the wrong way around, and didn’t seem dirty – I took it off once to check. After I took them off that evening my eyes hurt for a little while.

3/1: I wore them again today to run – this was one of their best uses yet! It’s good to see well without being weighed down by glasses while moving. Took a while to get them on and off and to get used to having them in, but no major dramas.
Just made a mixtape about making mixapes, which will be my contribution to the next mixtape exchange!

Note added to goal Watch Rage all night
I stayed up till 5am watching the Rage Fifty 2012 - though it was really pretty disappointing. The 25 Years of Rage specials (which I taped and watched later, in bits) were much better.

I didn't wear them yesterday because I'd been handling strong foods and it didn't feel right, but today I wore them for twelve hours! Initially I think I had one in the wrong way round, I changed it after a couple of hours and it was much better afterwards.
Well a year later I have finally tried again, with chicken. This recipe has ricotta instead of butter. It tasted nice, and cooked through very well, but wasn't the true Kiev taste I'm after. I will keep at it.

I had my appointment today and after getting a new prescription, the optometrist put some contacts on me. It took me a while to relax my eyes enough to let him do so, but it soon felt surprisingly great. I had a lot of initial trouble taking them off, but was then able to put them on by myself and after a comfortable five hour wear, I could take them off too.

The strangest thing is getting used to having them on even when I don't need them I.e. for short distances. I usually take my glasses off for reading, computer, eating etc. The optometrist assured me it would be fine for my sight in the long run, but that the way I use my glasses means that my focus reflexes are out of practice. Wearing contacts is making me feel a bit longsighted sometimes but that should settle.

This is a great example of goals falling into place because you've articulated them. My housemate, knowing that using a typewriter was on my life to do list, and my Day Zero list, found a shop that was willing to loan one out for a week. So I have this from Christmas Day to New Year's Eve, which is great because I'm on leave and have time to use it.

The typewriter is a Nakajima All. My housemate taught me to use it and naturally my work has mistakes, spaces missed and lots of variation in the shade of the ink. I didn't have very specific plans for what I would type so I've just been playing around so far, and typed a list of items on my Day Zero list that I've managed to complete to date.

This is on my day zero list, but I'm going to try to give blood first, as I'm a little low in iron and have to be careful in my timing for these two goals.

I have a list of Melbourne restaurants with good vegetarian options and love vegetables so this is definitely doable, I just have to plan it well.

My lovely girlfriend got me this book for Christmas which I think will be very helpful:
