RECENT ACTIVITY

My first proper game with my dad. It took over two hours and he gave me lots of hints. Of course he still won comfortably!

We've since had one more, that was a little quicker, but with less hints. I feel like I'm getting better but there is still so much to learn.

The chessboard is etched in the pavement on a big corner in the city in Melbourne and sometimes has giant chess pieces on it with people playing. In fact it often used to, but rarer now – this photo I took is years old. This is perfect for my Melbourne list and I want to do it. I’ve investigated how to get access to the giant pieces – all I need now is to learn to play – and choose a playing partner.

My dad gave me my first lesson and it was overwhelming. I have a lot to learn!

I bought some cleanser, (sampled) toner and moisturiser for my face from Lush, an organic cosmetic shop in Melbourne. I had a consultation where we tried various products and I like the feel of these so far. My face feels nice, kind of different but in a way that doesn’t encourage me to pick at it which is good. I’ll see how this new facial routine goes.

I've been using it a lot lately for my homemade soups so I can check this off!

See if this can be done in Salzburg.

The donation itself went fine. It did hurt a little when the needle went in, but really no big deal. It took longer than expected due to perhaps not having as much water as I should have (I drank heaps all day but kind of tapered off in the last couple of hours). So I was asked to squeeze my hand and wiggle my toes a lot, and got small heatpacks for my arm and hand to encourage blood flow. At one point the woman taking my blood thought she might have to finish early, but we didn't have to - I got there in the end. It may have taken more like 15 minutes for me, instead of 5-10 for the standard half-litre.

It hurt more than I expected when the needle was taken out. But that was very brief, and then I was fine. I stuck around for a while afterwards and got a free milkshake and crackers, then went to my friend's house and ate most of a pizza. I was told to eat and drink a lot to replenish the system so I did!

I did it!

I’ve been preparing for a month this time, after a previous attempt was unsuccessful, so was nervous for two reasons:

1) the obvious, new experience, needle, will it hurt, will I pass out

2) really wanting to just get it done and not be rejected again

During this month and especially the last week I ate a lot of beef, lamb, chickpeas, lentils, tofu + vitamin C-rich fresh orange juice, capsicum and carrots.

During the initial check, before testing my hemoglobin, the nurse tested my heart rate, and found that it was a little too high (104) to be able to donate, but she said that’s common on a first donation and we’ll measure that again later to see if it drops. My hemoglobin turned out okay – 129. The minimum to be allowed to donate is 120 and last time I was 118. Still not super-high so it looks like I really need to work at it to be eligible, but good news for this time.

I then sat in the donating area, chatted a little to my friend who was donating plasma (and was fine), read a book and tried to control my breathing. The nurse came back and measured my pulse manually and it was still too high. I knew it would be fine but I couldn’t help being nervous! After more attempts to calm down, some water, and a brief call to my girlfriend I finally managed to get it down to 98. So finally I was allowed to do it...

I went to the Enchanted Maze Garden in Arthur's Seat an hour out of Melbourne. The main attraction was a hedge maze, and I made my way through it. There were some wrong turns, but eventually I found everything I was supposed to - five buddhas, a small topiary garden and a Japanese garden at the centre.

I made Gwyneth Paltrow's Banana "Ice Cream"

It doesn’t have much (fake) milk so it tastes mostly like banana. Nice, and certainly very different. Not quite ice cream.

The mug is a custom Continental mug I got from collecting enough of their packet soup packages and says "vampire slayer". I love it but don't use it all that much and when I started the project I thought I'd meet this goal by keeping the mug at my desk at work and eating packet soups in it. However I've moved offices a lot and never felt stable enough to bother having my own soup mug in. Lately I've started cooking big pots of vegetable soups at home from Hugh Fearnsley-Whittingshall's new cookbook, and while dinner entrees I would eat from bowls, I have occasional snacks from the soup mug. This may be how I complete the goal.

Marked goal Send a secret to PostSecret as Done!

With the PostSecret event coming up, I wanted to make my secret in advance. Eventually I thought of something - a photo I had which didn't show what I looked like but was related to a secret. I added text to the photograph with Photoshop, and took it to a printing centre where I got it printed onto card paper and guillotined to the right size. Then I wrote the PostSecret address on the back and stamped it. After the PostSecret event, I put my secret into a mailbox.

I won! Well, I won in the lowest division - I won $13.60, and since the ticket of 12 games cost me $11.15 that comes to a profit of $2.45. Not bad for a one-off. I don't plan to do it again though.

I bought a ticket today, 12 games for tomorrow's draw. I was considering using the numbers from Lost but decided to let the machine choose the numbers. This was really no big deal, one of the final items added to round out the Day Zero list.
