ABOUT CHAD
Chad, located in Central Africa, is a country rich in cultural and natural wonders. One of the must-see attractions is Lake Chad, the largest wetland in the Sahel region, offering breathtaking views and opportunities for bird watching. For wildlife enthusiasts, Zakouma National Park is a haven for elephants, lions, giraffes, and various bird species. N'Djamena is the capital and largest city of Chad. A port on the Chari River, near the confluence with the Logone River, it directly faces the Cameroonian town of Kousséri, to which the city is connected by a bridge. It is also a special statute region, divided in 10 arrondissements. It is a regional market for livestock, salt, dates, and grains.
Zakouma National Park is a national park, located between Sarh and Am Timan, in the south of Chad. Created in 1963, it was Chad's first national park, and has an area of almost 3000 square kilometres (1200 square miles). It is entirely surrounded by the Bahr Salamat Faunal Reserve. Zakouma was neglected during the period of civil conflict, but a restoration programme, supported by the European Union, began in 1989 and is continuing in 2006.
Lake Chad (in French Lac Tchad) is a historically large, shallow lake in Africa, whose size has varied over the centuries. According to the UN it shrank as much as by 95 percent from about 1963 to 1998 yet they also state that "The 2007 (satellite) image shows significant improvement over previous years". Lake Chad is economically important, providing water to more than 20 million people living in the four countries that surround it on the edge of the Sahara Desert.
Abéché is the 4th largest city in Chad, the capital of Ouaddaï Region. The town is served by Abéché Airport.
