ABOUT KIRIBATI
Kiribati, officially the Republic of Kiribati, is an island nation located in the central tropical Pacific Ocean. It is composed of 32 atolls and one raised coral island, dispersed over 3.5 million square kilometres, (1,351,000 square miles) straddling the equator, and bordering the International Date Line at its easternmost point. The name Kiribati is the local pronunciation of "Gilberts", derived from the main island chain, the Gilbert Islands.

Betio's World War II relics
Betio is most famous for its role in World War II, when Allied and Japanese forces tore across the landscape for three days of intense fighting in 1943. By the end, only a charred chunk of earth remained and over 6,000 lives had been lost, making it one of the most brutal battles in US military history."
