PROGRESS UPDATE

I don't want to do this. It feels very slimy to me. Nevertheless, I have received the same suggestion from several people whom I do not consider at all slimy, so perhaps it's just toxic guilt/toxic shame doing its thing again.

I'm going to mark this finished because I've definitely gotten this started.
I've got postcards printed, I've got a sign to post, I should probably print more signs actually...there, done...I'm having a company print and distribute flyers for me.
So now it will just be a matter of putting up signs and setting out postcards. I'll wait until after Halloween since I'm kicking this off with a holiday promo. Seems only decent. I hate it when it's not even Halloween and people are trying to sell me Christmas stuff already. I love Christmas but come on, one holiday at a time. (less) (less)

I found an offering I don't hate making and ordered a sign to promote it. I'm waiting on advice from my mentor before designing postcards to distribute as well.
I really hate the current aesthetic. This whole minimalist, white space everywhere and "let's make everything neutral" is really horrible. On the other hand if you're not allowed to show any creativity or personality or taste, you don't have to take the time to do so. Left to my own preferences, I'd want to make a sign with a richly festooned Douglas fir against a cobalt blue, star-bedecked night sky, ideally with script in silver foil at the top: Holiday Gift Certificate Sale...you get the point, I'm maximalist and extra as it fucking gets. But if what people relate to these days is a design with about 5 lines of text all in the same font, and if their idea of festive is a little red noodly thing on the upper and lower borders of the page, well, okay. I used to write term papers. I can do boring. But I seriously cannot wait for this bullshit minimalist trend to end. If it were one of many options available for people who like it that would be fine, but it's taken over the damn world and now it's like you can't get anywhere unless you're hiding behind winter white walls and a $300 pale ecru pouf from the West Elm showroom for which nobody has any use.
