Though $300 was a lot of money to me when I started this list, the hardest part of this goal was dealing with the guilt I felt at not making it a bigger amount. To be fair, $300 is more money than I've donated to charity before, but when I directly compared it to the $1000 I was planning to put into superannuation and shares, each, not to mention the money I was putting into savings, it seemed stingy and heartless.
I had to mentally justify it by saying to myself - look, I'm a low-income earner. It makes sense for me to prepare for my own financial wellbeing because I can't trust anyone else to do it for me. And the more money I put into charity, the more likely I am to be in need of charity myself when I'm old if I don't adequately try to pay off my debts or prepare for my future. Which I think is reasonable. But I still feel guilty. Ironically, I think that setting this goal has made me feel more guilty than I would have if I'd decided to donate nothing at all.
I donated all $300 to research in the fight against mesothelioma, the cancer my husband's mother is suffering from. If it can help save her life and the life of others, it's well worth it.
