Maggie
New Zealand
30-ish. Cliché millennial - connoisseur of pets, plants and photography. I have diagnoses of ME/CFS, EDS, and others, and am using Day Zero as a means to track achievement since a 'normal' life is unlikely at this point.

The 7 Things Challenge:
7 Things x 2025

My seven answers to the Day Zero alternative New Year's resolutions poll:
  1. Learn how to upholster furniture
  2. Start walking regularly again
  3. Stop using social media during work hours
  4. Take a vacation to Australia
  5. Find time for what I want to do
  6. Try reducing sugar
  7. Be more consistent
PASSED!
According to goodreads I'm well over a quarter through this goal. I've been averaging about 150 books a year for the 22/23 years and will have read over 200 for this year so no danger at the moment of not making it,
In the process of making a list - it's a little all over the place, as I am considering "child" to be anything under the age of 13. I read a lot as a kid, and still do, so even with only about 10 minutes thinking there's about 70 books on the list as of this note 😂
Have put my name forward to be a trustee of the local community centre and to be part of a committee for the national organic sector group.
Fruit trees have been planted and half the grass has now been mulched. Need to mulch the other half, add raised boxes along the houseside and stake the blackberries.
Turns out because I am over 25, I only have to have my restricted for six months, not 12 like I thought. My full license test is now booked for the end of September.
Ended up having to do this as we recently adopted a new kitten who needed a safe space in the house.
This was easier than expected, and will likely be continued with the proviso that second hand items are preferred and on a one-in-one-out basis.
Marking this and other photography goals as failed as my interest in photography in general has been subsumed over the last 18 months by other interests. Don't think it's been helped by the fact the nerve damage in my wrist makes editing - my favourite part - a real struggle.

Will keep my gear in case the interest does arise again, but at this point I'm focusing on other things.
Blocked the sites that I usually do this on and am not reading the comments on the news or checking them at all over the weekend. This combined with some recent book reads, I am feeling mentally a lot better.
While I haven't been doing this particular list for six months, I bought my first houseplant in early November. Since it's still alive, I am counting it.
Joined the weekly working bee at the local community garden. Really impressed by the generosity of both knowledge and goods there.
Haven't hit snooze on my alarm in six weeks, so considering this done for now. Will see how winter goes.
Eyes are in excellent shape and I likely won't need glasses until I'm much older
Anything I grow currently is organic but supermarket prices are too expensive as it without including the organic premium to consider that right now.
Have made pickles, jam and various preserves. Both hot liquid cool seals and boil water methods. Not an expert by any stretch but has been fun and interesting to learn. Far more labour intensive than just throwing it in the freezer, but more satisfying feeling.
50 - 75% of the meals we eat week to week are now plant based so even though we aren't doing designated days - I am considering this complete.
Have a referral.
Seriously re-evaluating whether it's worthwhile continuing this. Only one year in, not in debt for it and at this point I don't gain anything in career progression for completing it - I do gain extra stress, work and expense though.
Can now legally do this. Sister and I are looking into when.
Didn't buy docs, but did replace my combat boots with a brand that lasted me decade last time I bought them, so am considering this done.
Got my restricted this week. I can now drive without another licensed driver in the car.
If I take a defensive driving course, I should be able to have my full before the end of the year.
Didn't notice this until recently, but this is my 15th year here. By the time I get to the end of this 1001, I'll have been doing these projects for over half my life.
Apart from my sisters room, this is completed.

Started 12/23 - Supporting Canteen. Non- profit for young people dealing with cancer, either themselves, or family members.
This was pretty tough to figure out as almost all of the suggestions I could find online were things we're already doing.
That includes:
Buying in bulk
Composting
Growing our own food
Not using synthetic chemicals in the home or garden
Turning electronics off at the wall
Owning a hybrid car
Washing clothes in cold water
Using a washing line not a dryer
Only washing dishes and laundry when we have a full load
Walking or using public transport wherever possible
When the car has to be used, combining errands
Making meals from scratch
Reducing meat intake
Buying second hand as much as possible - furniture, clothing, etc
Owning energy efficient appliances
Owning a small home - 90m2/969f2
Using reusables - water bottles, shopping bags, straws, baking mats/liners, bee wrap, face cloths, etc
Having a water filter
Glass, paper, aluminium gets recycled. So does plastic that can be done here in NZ.
Working remotely
Supporting brands that are both local and sustainable when we do have to buy new.

Big things like installing solar are on the long term list but we have to replace our roof first.
We also plan to reupholster our couch instead of replacing it.
Gonna mark this as done as I have reduced the amount of household waste going to the landfill by about 50%. Still a lot of work to do, but still an accomplishment.

This might be possible in Dec. My flights have been messed with and I have a four hour wait between flights in Auckland >.>
Have half the list done with 8 months to go, so going to consider this completed. Can migrate anything I don't get done over, plus add anything I want to do in the next half year.
